ASCONA (Back to towns) or [maps]

Ascona is 40 minutes’ drive from Lugano Airport from which the airlines; Darwin, Flybaboo and Swissair operate daily flights from the main Swiss airports and from Venice.

The Old Town of Ascona was built around the 16th century and a lot of the fascination relies on the old church of Pietro e Paolo. To get there you will need to weave your way through a web of lanes containing every kind of shop and restaurant which leads to the lieing directly on the lake. The area of Centovalli (100 valleys) is an area that begins directly behind and can be accessed from Ascona. The name was given to a valley that offers a variety of landscapes extending east from the River Maggia Delta to the Italian border. The Centovalli is a fantastic area for hiking and biking and includes wonderful gorges with dramatic waterfalls and bridges, smattered with glorious fields, vineyards, groves and out of the way villages.

-Main Attractions:

Try the Museo (Museum) Comunale d'Arte Moderna, on via Borgo 34 (tel. 091/759-81-40). This museum has exhibitions of modern art and a permanent collection which includes works by Klee and Utrillo, is open March to December, from Tuesday to Saturday from 10am to noon and 3 to 6pm, and Sunday 4 to 6pm.

Isole di Brissago is near the town and may be reached by boat. This island contains a botanical garden of Mediterranean and subtropical flora. Boats depart Ascona daily at 9:30am and run throughout the day, with the last departure from the island back to Ascona at 6pm. The ride takes 10 minutes and there is a small charge for the gardens.
