Ghiffa is a small comunity (approx.
1,500 people) about 7 km northeast of Verbania. It is most
famous for the Sacro Monte, a site of catholic pilgrimage and
worship.
As with many small Lakeside towns they have a number of small
events throughout the year to celebrate various historic events,
often centred around the park and parades thorugh the street.
The most famnous and historic element of Ghiffa is the 16th
century Church "Sacro Monte di Ghiffa" of the Crucifixion
and Trinity. With wonderful frescos
Dedicated to the mystery of the Trinity, the panoramic view
over the Piedmont side of Lake Maggiore ullustrates some remarkable
architecture. The architects and builders are of unknown origin
but the The Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mary was the first
part of the church to be constructed in 1647. |
