Locarno is
the capital of the Swiss district or Canton of Ticino,

of the smaller but popular destinations. The official language

The Festival
Internazionale del Cinema di Locarno, takes place
every year in August in the Piazza Grande. This Festival
hosts a delegation of recognized professionals from
the film industry worldwide. The Festival’s Industry

of films screened at the Festival an excellent opportunity
to sell their films to targeted partners. The different
competitions – from the International Competition
to the Filmmakers of the Present as well as the open-air
screenings on the giant screen in the Piazza Grande

-Main Attractions:
- The Astrovia Locarno is a 1:1 billion scale model
of the Solar System. The Sun can be found at the end
of Via Gioacchino Respini on the edge of the cycle
path, which runs alongside the river Maggia. The next
planet is Saturn (near the new Morettina road-bridge).
Cross the river continuing north to the golf course
Alle Gerre, in Losone, where you will find Neptune.
When you arrive the shores of Melezza River, continue
across the footbridge to Tegna, where next to the bell
tower is Pluto the final planet in the model, which
is 6 km away from the starting point along this cycle
path. Here the Centovallina train can take you back
to Locarno.
- Madonna del Sasso, Cardada and Cimetta
The sanctuary of Madonna del Sasso in Orselina which
is above the city goes back to a vision of the Virgin
Mary that the Franciscan brother Bartolomeo d'Ivrea
had on the night of 14/15 August 1480. The interior
is highly decorated, and a platform gives a magnificent
view of the city.
- A gondola runs from Orselina to the top of Cardada
(1340 m) high, and a tram goes further to the top of
Cimetta (el. 1670 m).
- The Castello Visconteo is on the edge of the old town
and was built in the 12th century. it was believed it
was the residence of a Captain Orelli, a key aide to
the Emperor. In 1260, it fell into the hands of the Ghibellines
and in 1342, the Visconti of Milan, attacked and overcame
the castle. It is named after him. Later in 1503 it came
into the hands of the Eidgenossen. Today however only
20% of the original structure remains. Most of that dates
from the 15th and 16th centuries. Only the foundation
remains from the original structure.
