Porto Valtravaglia
is a small town (2500 inhabitants approx) with a diverse
group of villages scattered throughout the local hillsides,
combined in 1928 to form one commune. As with many hamlets,
local traditions are still followed and many have preserved
their historical and artistic heritage. Between 17th
and 18th century, Porto was enriched like many of Lake
Maggiore's towns with with beautiful palaces, built by
the nobility and upper middle classes.
As
with most lake towns the religious buildings are often
the most interesting and provide an insight into the
history and attitudes over the last millennia. For example
the religious centre of Domo which dates back to 9th-10th
century where every year many organ recitals are performed.
Porto is also famous in Italy for its glasswork
industry, developing new rich commercial crafted items.
However like all the Lake towns the most important economic
activity is tourism both domestic and foreign.
