Travelling to Maggiore

Served by Rail

First remember that Lake Maggorie is in both Italy and Switzerland. So consider where you are going and where you are coming from. Combination travel is often needed.

Coming from Italy we recommend the Milano-Domodossola-Sempione-Paris-London international line stops at the station of Belgirate-Stresa. This allows transfer to a ferry and then onwards to smaller towns. Fly into Malpensa or Linate/Bergamo and then go to Milan central station.

Coming from Switzerland, we also recommend using the excellent Swiss railway system (Zurich Airport-Locarno: 3 hours) and then by Ferry, Bus or Taxi to your chosen town. The Euro city / Intercity route from Zurich to Italy has its nearest stop at Bellinzona. Trains go every hour. From Bellinzona there are good connections to Locarno, which is a few kilometres from Ascona and other Lake towns. "Swiss Passes" offer unlimited travel on the Swiss Travel System (a network of 16,000 kilometres combining rail, boat, bus and public transport in thirty Swiss cities). In addition, you will receive a 25% discount on most mountain rail and cable car trips. The pass is valid for 4, 8 or 15 days or for 1 month.

By Air

The easiest way to get to this region is by flying into a Milanese airport. For UK travelers we have created a special page of links. Another but expensive possibility is to use a direct flight to the small airport Lugano then take a taxi to Lake Maggiore. See our useful air links for airports on the right.

By Road
From Malpensa take the A336 to the A8, take the Milan direction then head off on the A9 to Maggiore and Switzerland..
From LInate, take the A1 toward Monza, then the A4, West, then join the A9 North toward Switzerland and Maggiore
Maggiore can also be approached from Switzerland through San Bernadino or Splugenplass and then along the lake roads, or can be approached through Chiasso, after going through the San Gotthard tunnel. This Swiss border is only a couple of miles from Maggiore.
We suggest you study the map carefully, the route is very simple and Maggiore is just before the Swiss border. There are tolls however and a few Euros may be necessary to navigate them. Italian drivers are famous for their casual approach, this combined with the narrow dual carriageways and link roads means care needs taking at all times.
Getting Around Lake Maggiore
Steamers, boats and buses all serve the lake with good connections to towns and villages all over Lake Maggiore. The frequency of the services increases in peak season i.e. from May to September but also operates in the winter months. All the western shore towns are connected and regular boats also access the resorts and popular Villas These are operated by Navigazione Lago Maggiore ( tel. 0323 30393 or toll free 800 551801). The ticket office is in Stresa at the landing stage, Piazza Marconi 14-16. There is a car ferry between Intra (Verbania) and Laveno (eastern shore).Buses also run. Taxis are expensive.
Maps

We would alwasy recommend a map and guide, especially with the fractured nature of Lake Maggiore.
